Their flow is often non-Newtonian, meaning the viscosity can change depending on shear rate, temperature, or time. For example, when stirred, pumped, or compressed, a semi-fluid may become easier to move. When left undisturbed, it may hold its shape or resist flow. This makes semi-fluid materials useful in products that must remain stable during storage but still be processable during manufacturing.Viscous AFM, on the other hand, refers to a material with stronger resistance to flow. It behaves more like a thick liquid and requires greater force to move, mix, or pump. Viscosity is the dominant feature of this type of material. Compared with semi-fluid AFM, viscous AFM typically has less structural recovery and less tendency to behave like a soft solid. It may still be shear-thinning or temperature-sensitive, but its main characteristic is a relatively high internal friction between layers of the material. Because of this, viscous AFM often demands more energy during processing and may require specialized equipment to ensure uniform handling.The difference between the two becomes especially important in practical applications. Semi-fluid AFM can be easier to spread, dispense, or coat while still maintaining good stability. It is often preferred when a balance is needed between flowability and form retention. Viscous AFM may be chosen when a thicker consistency is desirable, such as for sealing, cushioning, damping, or slow-release performance. However, excessive viscosity can create challenges such as poor mixing, inconsistent dosing, air entrapment, or uneven surface coverage.Temperature also influences both types of AFM. Semi-fluid materials may become much thinner when heated and more rigid when cooled. Viscous materials are usually even more sensitive to temperature changes because small thermal shifts can greatly alter flow behavior. This is why process control is critical. Engineers and technicians often monitor temperature, pressure, and shear conditions carefully to maintain product quality.In summary, semi-fluid AFM and viscous AFM differ mainly in flow behavior, structural stability, and processing difficulty.
